It is 10:00 PM on June 21, 2025 — and I fear this date may go down as a turning point, a moment when the United States stumbled into a new and dangerous era of conflict. Today marks the beginning of what could become a long path of destruction, bloodshed, and tragic loss for both U.S. military forces and innocent civilians — all set in motion by our so-called Commander-in-Chief.
The irony is thick. This is the same man who, during his campaign, repeatedly promised to keep us out of foreign wars. The man who claimed he would steer the nation away from conflict has now steered us directly toward what could become World War III.
Just days ago, he dismissed the urgent warnings of his own Director of National Intelligence — a respected former military officer — who reported that Iran was not producing nuclear weapons. Instead of listening to the experts, he chose to trust his own instincts — as he has so many times before, including during the pandemic when he disregarded the guidance of CDC scientists.
One need only look to his record: a man who secured five deferments to avoid serving in Vietnam, with no background in military strategy or intelligence, now believes he knows better than those with lifetimes of experience.
But even if — for the sake of argument — we assume that Trump’s decision to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities was tactically sound, the manner in which it was carried out betrays a fundamental ignorance of military strategy.
History offers clear lessons. Would Admiral Yamamoto have announced Japan’s intent to bomb Pearl Harbor a week in advance? Would Eisenhower have broadcast plans for D-Day before launching the Normandy invasion? And can anyone imagine Osama bin Laden declaring his intent to attack the Twin Towers days before 9/11?
The key to any successful military operation is secrecy and the element of surprise. Yet this president, driven by ego and political calculation, openly telegraphed his intentions. Iran — and its allies — had ample time to prepare, move assets, and harden their defenses. Now, he will no doubt declare the operation a triumph and boast of having eliminated hidden nuclear threats. But in reality, he gave Iran weeks to ready themselves.
Following the bombings, the president now claims to “seek peace.” But does anyone seriously believe that Iran — along with its allies Russia, China, North Korea, and their proxy forces — will simply stand down after such a blatant act of aggression?
Far more likely, this reckless action will set off a wave of retaliation. I expect U.S. military bases across the Middle East and Europe will be among the first targets. Attacks on American tourists, diplomats, and our remaining allies may soon follow. And, tragically, we must also prepare for the real possibility of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. The scale of these consequences is still unknown — but the threat is no longer hypothetical.
One can only hope that those who would retaliate understand this is not what the American people asked for. I can only pray that any response is directed toward those truly responsible — the political leaders in Washington who allowed this to happen — and perhaps a certain gilded estate in Florida.
History may one day look back on this date as the moment when America’s path took a dangerous turn. We can only hope it is not too late to change course.
